Medblogformule toegepast op Engelstalige medblogs

Update: The official rankings for August are published! At MedblogEN you can find the most recent list.
Update in English
I got the request to translate the algorithm for determining the rank of medblogs. In table at the bottom of this article you can see how the “value” of a medblog is determined. For the moment I use eight parameters i.e: the number of published articles, the number of comments, the mean Google pagerank of the homepage, the mean Technorati-rank, -inblog and inlink numbers. And finally I use the mean number of subscription to Feedburner (the circulation) and the mean hits of Feedburner.
These parameters lead to the algorithm: value = (# articles / 10) + (# comments / 20) + (pagerank / 2) + (100000 / technorati rank) + ( technorati inlink / 500) + ( technorati inblog / 500) + (feedburner circulation /200) + (feedburner hits /1000). So a medblog gets 1 point for every 10 articles, 1 point for every 20 comments, etc. I chose the numbers (10,20,2,100000, 500,500, 200,1000) in such a way that it becomes a dynamic ranking system (or at least that is what I hope it will become). So I still have to experiment with the parameters numbers but for now I will keep them fixed.
If you have suggestions or improvements please let me know. To construct the list below I used the medblogs from the Healthcare 100. Since I just started to collect the data, the result below are just an indication. I did not plan to construct the English-written-medblog-list on a regular basis, but … if I get a lot I requests to do so, I will consider it.
For the english readers : I also updated the about medblog.nl section.
Update 2

Could you translate please the type of the algorithm? I’m curious.
Thank you!

Thank you for the fast reaction! I think this algorithm is much more accurate and comprehensive than that of the eDrug site. I’m going to write a post about it.

How do you factor in medical/health blogs that do not have comments?

@ SSandy: If you take a look at the algorithm [value = (# articles / 10) + (# comments / 20) + (pagerank / 2) + (100000 / technorati rank) + ( technorati inlink / 500) + ( technorati inblog / 500) + (feedburner circulation /200) + (feedburner hits /1000)] you see that a medblog obtains 1 point for every 20 comments. Thus, if a medblog does not facilitate comments it doesn’t get any points for the comment part.
In my opinion comments are an important part of the definition of a weblog. That is why I included them in the algorithm. I use the comment rss-feed to obtain information about the number of comments. A big disadvantage is that a lot of website do not add a link to the comment rss-feed in their header. So I have to check the website manually to check whether they have a comment-feed. I am busy checking all the international website on comment-feeds. If someone has a solution for this, please mail me at jan @ medblog.nl.
I have to admit that I did not add the comment rss-feed to my header yet :-(.

Yes, I noticed that blogs without comments are penalized, which is something I disagree with as not all professoinal medical writers can afford to spend full-time moderating comments and thus don’t have them. Many of these blogs are ones that are raising the bar for quality of content, as well. That should not detract from the popularity or ranking of their blog, if that is really what you are trying to determine in your algorithm. Just a thought to consider. Thanks!

Thanks for your response.
Well I partly agree with you. I think that interaction with your readers is a good thing. Even if you are very busy you should have some time to moderate your comments. With respect to the time-consuming activities of medical professionals I found the following interesting comments from David Rothman.
But … I agree with you that it is unfair to give the comments too many influence. At the end of this month I will be able to determine the influence of the comments on the ranking of a medblog. If this influence is too big I will decrease it by adjusting the numbers in front of the parameters. The same point holds for the articles. If a medblog decides to publish a lot of advertorials it will gain points with “low”-quality content. It will be hard to get rid of these advertorials automatically. The current algorithm puts a lot of emphasis on the Technorati ranking. Again, I will consider this at the end of the month when I will be able to determine the influence of the individual parameters on the overall ranking.
It is my hope that by using the above defined parameters I will be able to create an overall idea about the quality of a site. Still it is very hard to define the quality of a medblog. Maybe I will add an opinion panel to the ranking, but I do not have the right infrastructure yet.
