Vandaag een overzicht van interessante nieuwe gadgets die ik in de blogosphere tegenkwam. Alhoewel ik de tip heb gehad om mijn aantal feeds te reduceren heb ik dat vooralsnog niet gedaan. Ik kan er nog geen afstand van doen. Wellicht mis ik iets als ik een feed verwijder. Voordeel van zoveel feeds blijft dat ik veel informatie krijg. Hieronder volgt een lijst met nieuwe gadgets die ik de laatste weken tegenkwam.

• Medische plaatjes op een iPhone. Steeds meer bedrijven grijpen de iPhone aan om applicaties op te draaien. Waarom wel voor de iPhone en niet voor een andere “normale” PDA? Het zal wel een marketingtruc zijn om aandacht te krijgen.
• Noelle, de pop die bevalt. Dit is een elektronische pop, die de geboorte simuleert.
  

  Noelle even features a cervix that dilates, while the pulse rises even higher as the compressor pushes out a healthy baby mannequin. It can also be simulated to deliver babies in the wrong position for that added drama in the operating theater. Trainee doctors are very happy with Noelle, which gives them the opportunity to learn and practice but do no harm.

• Niet-invasief longimaging apparaat.
  

  The VRIxp is a radiation free medical device that is expected to allow physicians to easily obtain a series of dynamic images, designed to show the shape and condition of the lungs in real time. The VRIxp has potential to provide visual representations of not only structural changes in the lungs, but also functional changes.

• Virtuele training voor chirurgen.
  

  Virtual Heroes Inc. (VHI), a leader in advanced learning technologies, today announced that it has expanded its reach into the healthcare market with the creation of two instructional 3D simulations for heart surgery procedures. These procedures demonstrated new treatments for atrial fibrillation. The first animation was an open chest procedure and the second, demonstrated laparoscopic access in a closed chest setting.

• Een implanteerbare chip verstuurt informatie over (gewonde) soldaten.
  

  The biochip (grain of rice) could measure and relay such information as lactate and glucose levels in the event of a major hemorrhage, whether on the battlefield, at home or on the highway. The device has other long-term potential applications, such as monitoring astronauts’ vital signs during space flights and reading blood-sugar levels for diabetics.

• Chip kan epilepsie voorspellen en glaucoom behandelen.
  

  Purdue University researchers have developed new miniature devices designed to be implanted in the brain to predict and prevent epileptic seizures and a nanotech sensor for implantation in the eye to treat glaucoma.

• Mini bloedpomp zorgt voor het hart.
  

  “The first implant of the Synergy device was very successful and the patient has already been discharged home and is doing very well,” said Prof. Meyns, Principal Investigator of the trial. “While CircuLite’s feasibility clinical study is in a bridge-to-transplant setting, the ultimate need for this type of device will be among those chronic heart failure patients who may not be eligible for a heart transplant. A partial support approach to chronic heart failure treatment may be better able to address the treatment needs and improve the quality of life for this unserved group of patients, who otherwise have no other options.”
