ukflag.pngThe official rankings for August are published!
My algorithm for ranking english written medblogs did get some attention. Some comments were postive, others more neutral. Other medbloggers were more critical of the used algorithm. As I pointed out it was not my intention to publish this ranking every month, but since it seems to fulfill a need I decided to publish this list every month. For now I publish the preliminary result for August. This list contains 356 medblogs. I did not change the original algorithm, but David Rothman’s comments make sense. So I am looking into changing the algorithm. The preliminary list is published below. The official list will be published on the MedblogEN-page.

I already created a widget for the Dutch list, as you can see in the right corner of this website. I can also make one for the english-written list. So send me a mail at jan @ medblog.nl if you want such a widget for your site. Then I will mail you the code.

I don’t know what your criteria for listing are, but if you would like to add my specialized web Journal to your list, be my guest.

My web Journal highlights the 30 years I spent as an ophthalmic industry consultant, and the 25 years spent consulting and writing about medical lasers and their applications.

More recently, I have presented the latest information about Avastin and Lucentis for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration. When people search for info on these two drugs, my web Journal usually appears among the top five sources for information.

For over 20 years, I wrote “technical update” columns for Ocular Surgery News, Medical Laser Report and other publications. I have recently posted a list of my columns, articles and reports on my web site.

    Thanks for your consideration.

Gyanish, I have added your blog to the list. Your blog should appear in the list after the next update.

Cool list. Is there any chance that you can include my 10 health blogs into your list? :) I could email you the RSS and links if you want!

Here’s something that might help with your [impressive] undertaking. A very good example of the “Authority/Accuracy” David Rothman was talking about: Well Woman Blog is ranked #62 while The Blog That Ate Manhattan is #77. The problem? Here’s an actual line from a WWB post: “A variety of [birth control] pills are available as well as injections and patches. None have proven safe for a woman to use.

That last statement alone should disqualify WWB from inclusion in any medblogger ranking. Of course, the key question is how do you design an algorithm capable of distinguishing authoritative content from nonsense?

I look forward to the new algorithm.

@Ema: Thanks for your help. I agree with you that WWB should be excluded from the list on the basis of the post you mentioned. But even for a human it is very hard to conclude what is true and what is not. I wrote an article about that, unfortunately for now only in Dutch. I have some faith in the ‘Wisdom of the crowds’. If WWB writes nonsense, then less blogs are going to link to that site. As a result of that their ranking will increase, i.e. at a lower position.

    Jan,

Good point about the “Wisdom of the crowds”, but only as a measure of popularity. Now, if you could combine that with a way to measure accuracy I think you’re on to something.

I like your list! Please don’t change your algorithm too much.

And thanks for going to all the effort to put this together.

@Crabby: Why should I not change to much in the algorithm? Are you perhaps afraid to drop a few positions ;-) ?

    Jan, exactly!

I like your list because it likes me! Cranky Fitness is a sometimes silly blog, so I’m very happy to be included. :)

I’ll see if I can install some multi-language tool for WordPress. If you have a good suggestion, let me know.
