Medicine 2.0 in 2015

Early morning april 7th 2015 I wake up because my son cries. I go to his room and he looks ill. He is coughing and has a fever. Do I need to alert a physician? Or can I wait a little longer? I touch the screen in the room to enter the symptoms my son shows into an online application. Luckily my son’s condition is not serious and I just need to give him some medication. But what medication is right? Do I need standard proven medication or should I try new medication that is still in trial? I can easily understand the information since most public accessible health information is written according to clear guidelines.

But what medication did he get last time he was ill? Let’s find out. Again I touch the screen and my son’s personal medical records pop-up on the screen. Once upon a time a person’s medical data were the property of institutions and not of patients. Nowadays this has changed, and I can decide behind my home computer which health care provider gets access to the records. But if you want to consult a physician you have to sign a weaver in which you state that you deliver all relevant information electronically to your doctor. The doctor can now receive the information everywhere due to wireless technology. And since medical information and communication is standardized I can send my son’s medical information to every doctor. Almost every doctor now knows and uses the advantages of IT and the possibilities of internet.

But this time I do not need to consult a physician. In the meantime my son has fallen asleep and I leave his room. On my way to the master bedroom I decide to drink a glass of water downstairs in the kitchen. In the kitchen I see a picture of my business companion with whom I started a health website in 2007. My thoughts wander back to that time. If only we could have been one of the most popular health websites in 2007. In that days web 2.0 was a feeling, a flow, a buzz, maybe even a new philosophical idea. Health 2.0 would change all our lives. Also science could not escape the 2.0-trend. Even the famous journal Nature, now only available online, was engaged in e-science.

Well those were the days. Quickly I drink a glass of water and return to the master bedroom. Hopefully I can get some more hours of sleep. When I wake up I have to remember to read the first Medicine 2.0 Carnaval of 2008 at Monash Medical Student. In my memory it was one of the best carnivals.
