It is a pleasure to host the Medicine 2.0 carnival for the second time. The first time I wrote about the possibilities of Medicine 2.0 in 2015. This time I will use some of the articles to tell something about dutch practice.
Canadian EMR discusses the biggest benefit of E-prescribing: the reduction of medication errors. Let them know what your experience is with E-prescribing. In the Netherland we are waiting for a national electronic medication system. The first deadline was set for 2004, but we are still waiting.
Crossover Healthcare analyzes the next generation practice models used by Enoch Choi MD, Jordan Shlain MD and Jay Parkinson MD using The Long Tail. In the Netherlands GP’s are also looking into the possibilities of internet. Some GP’s in the northern part of the Netherlands offer their patients several online modules such as online consult and a request for a prescription for known medication. You can see a presentation about these GP’s below. Unfortunately this presentation is only in dutch.
David Rothman is attending The AMA’s Medical Communications Conference, where he is updated on using google, on using internet to stay on top of medical information and on best practices for healthcare blogging. I am looking forward to a report of this conference.
Digital Pathology links to the powerpoint of the last Lab InfoTech Summit.
John Sharp refers to the Top 100 Open Source Software Tools for Medical Professionals.
Life as a Healthcare CIO describes his journey towards electronic clinical documentation.
Over the past 3 years, we’ve been executing our Clinical Systems strategic plan to enhance clinical documentation, decision support, and data integration for all our care areas. Each of these deserves its own blog entry, and here’s an overview of our clinical documentation efforts.
I find this article very interesting since I am currently implementing an EMR´s in a large hospital in the Netherlands.
The New York Times discusses an article featured in The New England Journal of Medicine that warns for a change in medical practice if we are going to store our medical data online at Google or Microsoft.
But Microsoft and Google, the authors note, are not bound by the privacy restrictions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or Hipaa, the main law that regulates personal data handling and patient privacy. Hipaa, enacted in 1996, did not anticipate Web-based health records systems like the ones Microsoft and Google now offer.
I also wrote about the possibility to store medical data at Google and Microsoft.
At Health 2.0 we can read about behavioral ad targeting in healthcare. The Network Advertising Initiative proposes a list with consumer segments that companies should avoid targeting. In the Netherlands it is forbidden for pharmaceutical companies to target consumers, but non-pharmaceutical companies can target consumers. I am not sure whether they use contextual advertising on the segments that the NAI proposes.
iHealthBeat discusses the emergence of virtual house calls in North America. Two large insurers even plan to reimburse physicians for online consultations. This is a nice possibility of the internet. In the Netherlands several examples of virtual house calls exist. But a physician can only treat a patient if 1) the physician knows the patient and if 2) the patient already consulted the physician with the complaint he wants to consult the physician online about. The physician gets 4,50 euro per consult.
Berci shows us the possibilities of telemedicine using a mobile phone and a microscope. In the Netherland several GP’s already take pictures of dermatological conditions and mail them to a dermatologist.
Thanks for reading and the next carnival will take place on the 4th of May at Canadian Medicine and do not forget to take a look at my new website MedBlogLOG. It aggregates all the dutch (related) medblogs. Some of them are even written in english. The archives of Medicine 2.0 are also available online.
